We knew it had to happen eventually, but it still came as a shock to the system when shorts weather disappeared after 10 nearly unbroken weeks.
The wind gave us an added dimension of concern due to our lovely gazebo. In trying to take it down earlier in the week, my vertically challenged assistant got a little ahead of herself and we ended up with a very bent leg. Most unfortunately it’s all bent at the top, so the sliding cuff can’t move and the gazebo can’t properly dissemble anymore. After a few days of looking at the forecast and seeing the 40mph gusts on their way, I decided to find a way. First, I secured it more firmly, then I looked more closely at the structure, selected some screwdrivers and started unscrewing the dodgy corner. I got it down during the gusty winds, pulled all the loose things out of the shed, carried the table over and the chairs, put the 3D jigsaw back together and came indoors to find Tilly still engrossed in She-Ra. If the wind had carried me away, she’d have been none the wiser until she wanted feeding… but I was chuffed to bits with my handiwork. Remains to be seen if I’ll manage to get it back together when the weather clears up again, but at least I avoided it doing any damage.
The dogs haven’t minded the change in weather at all – they’ve swapped long days of sun bathing in the garden for endless sofa cuddles. This weekend we’ve done The Playmobil Movie, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Transformers (1, 2 & 3) and A Wrinkle In Time. Literally hours upon hours of sofa cuddles. It’s a hard life being a dog in our house 😉
They’ve not missed out on their walks, and even went out sporting their rain coats yesterday. I remember when I first got them – Middle of Lidl is a place of wonder! I wasn’t sure how they’d take to it, especially as Georgie is skinnier than Bindi and the tummy strap moves around a fair bit while she’s walking. They both seem to love them though, as long as Tilly doesn’t try to make them have the hoods up <insert eye roll> Maybe life as a dog in our house is harder than I give them credit for! lol
Our baking this week was, well, probably best never repeated in the most delectable way tee hee hee. She chose Viennese biscuits and they turned out so melt in the mouth amazing that I nearly passed out from a sugar crash – not even kidding! And we couldn’t spread the chocolate because they crumbled as soon as you applied any pressure… so they didn’t last long. I think between us we polished off the entire batch in two days.
She wants to make a cake next week… I’m thinking carrot, because I don’t like carrot cake and frankly my jeans need all the help they can get at the moment!
The garden is growing at an astonishing rate – probably very grateful for the rain.
Check out Tilly’s sunflowers and the change in only 5 days. The line of vertical dots in each is the same line on the front of the shed. I have a feeling I’ll be struggling to hold back the “well I did suggest planting them along the fence as spaced out as the packet said darling” soon. Hopefully they’ll calm down enough to get re-homed before they’re too big for the planter.
We also spotted these beauties coming out in the lower levels of the bush at the back of the patio. Not sure as yet why there no flowers higher up, but we’ll keep an eye on them.
I remain “not really a gardener” but I’m noticing things in this extended at-home-ness period that I never normally would. These Captain’s Log posts are essentially my scrapbook of what we’ve been doing and how I we’ve been feeling at the time. In months to come, I’ll look back and read these posts again and I hope I feel content that I spent my time well.
How’s your week been? Xx
